Messi Calls Barca’s Rehearsed Pique Goal ‘A Lie’

Messi Calls Barca’s Rehearsed Pique Goal ‘A Lie’

Lionel Messi admitted Gerard Pique’s goal was not a training ground masterpiece as Barcelona beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 on Wednesday to seal top spot in their Champions League group for a 12th consecutive season.
Messi opened the scoring at the Philips Stadion following a move he had started by the halfway line in the 61st minute, netting his sixth goal in the competition this season in just three appearances.
The Argentine forward then turned provider, setting up Pique 10 minutes later as the defender deflected home a free kick from inside the area.
Pique, half-joking, said after the game that the set play had been “rehearsed” and was the result of a lot of hard work on the training ground, but Messi was unable to keep the story up.
“It wasn’t rehearsed, that’s a lie,” Messi told Movistar. “It was a poorly taken free kick, but luckily Pique was there. He saw [the ball] and he took advantage of the situation.”
Despite winning the game, Barca spent large parts of the match on the back foot. PSV created over 20 chances, hitting the woodwork three times and drawing several good saves from Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
However, the Dutch side, who were eliminated from Europe as a consequence of this result, were unable to take advantage of their opportunities. Luuk de Jong’s 83rd-minute header came too late. (ESPN)

Arsenal Clinch Europa League Top Spot With Win In Ukraine

Arsenal Clinch Europa League Top Spot With Win In Ukraine

A youthful Arsenal side scored three first-half goals to cruise past Vorskla Poltava in Kiev and secure top spot in Europa League Group E.
The match had initially been in doubt because of security concerns in Poltava, but Uefa intervened and moved the tie to the Ukraine capital.
Teenage forward Emile Smith Rowe scored his second goal in as many European starts, before Aaron Ramsey converted his first penalty for the club. Nineteen-year-old Joe Willock claimed his first senior goal for the club four minutes from half-time in below freezing conditions.
With qualification already certain before kick-off, Unai Emery’s men knew three points would clinch top spot because of a better head-to-head record with second-placed Sporting Lisbon.
Arsenal will now avoid the four best teams dropping down from the Champions League in the last 32.Arsenal took the lead in the 10th minute when the ball fell kindly to Smith Rowe inside the area following a deflection from a Vorskla defender.
The talented forward showed poise and composure to tuck the ball into the net, before Ramsey – in his final season for the club – dusted himself off after being bundled over inside the area to roll the ball past Bohdan Shust from the spot.
The Londoners continued to dominate the match, enjoying just under 60% of possession and limiting the hosts to only two shots on target – Petr Cech’s only real involvement in the bitter cold.
Willock added the gloss to an impressive first-half performance minutes before the interval with a finish of which club legend Thierry Henry would have been proud. (BBC)

Giroud Scores Twice As Chelsea See Off PAOK Salonika To Secure Top Spot In Europa League Group L

Giroud Scores Twice As Chelsea See Off PAOK Salonika To Secure Top Spot In Europa League Group L

Olivier Giroud scored twice as Chelsea saw off PAOK Salonika to secure top spot in Europa League Group L.
The Frenchman curled home from Pedro’s pass before burying a volley from Cesc Fabregas’ lofted through ball to give the hosts a two-goal lead at the break.
The Greek visitors had been down to 10 men since the seventh minute with Yevhen Khacheridi dismissed for diving in and denying Giroud a clear goal-scoring opportunity.A depleted PAOK tired further in the second half and 18-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi found the net before substitute Alvaro Morata headed in the youngster’s cross with his first touch off the bench.
Chelsea play Hungarians MOL Vidi on 13 December in a final dead-rubber group game. After Maurizio Sarri’s 18-match unbeaten run as new Chelsea manager came to an abrupt halt with a 3-1 defeat by Tottenham on Saturday, the Italian changed all 10 outfield players for this encounter. It gave several fringe players a chance to stake a claim for more first-team game-time. With Morata still not fully convincing up front, Giroud now has four goals in his last three Blues games. The France international lacks Morata’s pace, but followed his precise first with a clever dart in behind the PAOK defence and a powerful first-time effort.
Elsewhere, Hudson-Odoi, who won the under-17 World Cup with England in 2017 and has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, had some bright moments, the best of which was a crisp snap-shot that fizzed inside the near post for Chelsea’s third and his first for the club. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was perhaps of more interest to the watching England manager Gareth Southgate and impressed with his quick feet and incisive passing. He was unfortunate not to add his name to the scoresheet bringing a superb save out of Alexandros Paschalakis with a fierce 20-yard effort. (BBC)

DJ Khaled and?Floyd Mayweather charged by US SEC for Illegally promoting Bitcoin

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr and music producer DJ Khaled will pay thousands of dollars to settle charges that they violated US financial laws.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission announced the settlement on Thursday as the US financial regulator said the men failed to disclose payments they received to promote certain cryptocurrency investments.

The men neither admitted nor denied the claims, but agreed to pay combined penalties totalling more than $750,000. The two cases are the first the SEC has brought over touting violations involving initial coin offerings or ICOs, a relatively new investment vehicle associated with crypto-currencies. An ICO allows people to invest in a company by buying "tokens" or "coins" that it issues.

Despite the new language, the SEC has warned investors that it views many of the offerings as investments governed by existing securities laws. Those rules require disclosure of payments in exchange for publicity.  In this case, the SEC said Mayweather received $300,000 to promote three separate offerings, including one by Centra Tech, a Miami company that the SEC accused of fraud in April.

Mayweather's promotions included a message to his Twitter followers that Centra's ICO "starts in a few hours. Get yours before they sell out, I got mine…" Khaled was paid $50,000 by the same company, the SEC said.

The SEC said DJ Khaled agreed to repay the $50,000 he received for the endorsement, as well as a $100,000 fine and interest while Mayweather will repay the $300,000 he received, as well as a $300,000 fine and interest.

SEC Enforcement Division Co-Director Steven Peikin said the cases were a reminder that investors should "be sceptical of investment advice posted to social media platforms, and should not make decisions based on celebrity endorsements".

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promoted 2,209 members of its staff in its 2018 promotion exercise.

Malam Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Member, Information and Voter Education Committee disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja.  According to Haruna 847 junior and 1,362 senior staff were promoted after the commission considered the report of its Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee (AFDC).
“In furtherance to the Commission’s commitment to the welfare of its staff, 2,209 were promoted. Out of a total of 927 junior staff who sat for the 2018 promotion examinations, 847 passed and were promoted accordingly.
Of the 1,847 senior staff who took the exams, 1,517 passed. However, 1,362 were promoted in accordance with the existing vacancies.
Out of this number, 315 persons were promoted to Directorate Cadre, eight of whom have become Directors,” he said.

According to reports, Shuaibu was apprehended by police detectives attached to Gawu Babangida Division in Gurara LGA of Niger State while on a routine patrol of the area on Thursday November 29th.

When interrogated, the suspect said the eyeball was removed from a victim of communal clash between Igbira and Bassa people in Nasarawa State and that he was to sell the eyeball at the cost of N250,000. He said he worked with an accomplice named Ojo who is currently on the run.
“My job is to deliver human parts given to me by Ojo to his clients across the northern states. We make quick money in this business but I cannot tell what the buyers use them for,” he said.
The police say the suspect will be arraigned in court as soon as investigation is concluded.

AWCON 2018: NFF Promise Super Falcons Huge Bonus To Beat South Africa

AWCON 2018: NFF Promise Super Falcons Huge Bonus To Beat South Africa

The Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick on Thursday promised to reward the Super Falcons with $10,000 if they retain the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations title in Ghana by defeating South Africa on Saturday.

The Falcons battle Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the final of the competition at the Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana on Saturday. The two teams have qualified for the France 2019 World Cup but while the Falcons are seeking to win their ninth African crown, the South Africans want to claim their first title.

Pinnick, who visited the team at their hotel in Accra on Thursday, appealed to the team to win the title as a birthday gift for him. The CAF 1st vice president’s birthday is on Saturday. The Falcons had earned $3,000 for a win in the group phase but were earmarked for $5,000 each for victory in the final.

In a statement on Thursday, Pinnick thanked the team for their resilience, adding that the trophy would be an appreciation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts to football development in the country.

“I want to let you know that the government and the good and great people of Nigeria are happy with your performance in the championship so far. They are looking forward to you retaining the trophy by beating South Africa on Saturday.

“Let me commend the lofty commitment, dedication and resilience that you have displayed so far in the championship, alongside that unique Nigerian spirit that was mostly in evidence against the Cameroonians in the semi-final.

“You are indeed true champions, and we believe you will retain the Cup on Saturday. Go out there and win on Saturday and earn yourselves $10,000 each, as against the $5,000 that the NFF earlier promised.”
Chairman of the Nigeria Women’s Football League Aisha Falode, who was also at the event, thanked the NFF president for the kind gesture, advising the players to use football to bring the nation together.

Team coach Thomas Dennerby also appreciated Pinnick for his promises to the team, adding that the team would not have achieved much without the efforts of the backroom staff, who have forged a strong bond with him.

The team’s captain Onome Ebi and Rita Chikwelu promised that they would overcome Banyana Banyana in Saturday’s final in order to return to Nigeria with the trophy.

Ebi said,
“We have the World Cup ticket now, which was always our first target here. The second is winning the cup for a third successive time and ninth time overall. It is a mission we are determined to accomplish on Saturday.”

Robber Begs Mob To Remove Charmed Ring From Finger Before Dying

Robber Begs Mob To Remove Charmed Ring From Finger Before Dying

After much beating, one of the robbers lynched by an irate mob, yesterday, along Aba-Owerri Road, Aba, Abia State, pleaded with the mob to pull off a charmed ring in his finger for him to die.

It was gathered that the suspects snatched money from a victim, who was at a nearby bank to withdraw money, before racing towards Aba-Owerri Road. An eyewitness said unknown to the suspects, they were trailed by some tricycle operators after the victim raised the alarm.

He said: “The robbers almost escaped with their motorcycle, but were caught in a gridlock along Aba-Owerri road where the tricycle riders raised the alarm.” The eyewitness alleged that the robbers confessed to being members of the gang that killed a tricycle rider a week ago at Immaculate Avenue and made away with his tricycle. He added: “The criminals trailed someone to a bank and snatched money from the man as he came out and took off in their motorcycle. The tricycle riders pursued them as the victim shouted for help. On getting to Star Paper Mile Junction here in Umungasi, they were caught up in the traffic jam and the tricycle riders came through the other lane blocked them and shouted for help.

“People arrested them and beat them for about 30 minutes, but nothing worked until they discovered that they had charms on them. Their charms were pulled out and one was beaten to death while the other refused to die. “He later pleaded with the crowd to pull out the charm on his finger which was a ring. It was pulled out before he died. These were the same group of robbers that killed a tricycle rider some weeks ago at Immaculate Avenue. That big one there confessed when people were beating him close to death. One of the tricycle riders, who helped in the arrest of the fleeing robbers, said the criminals relied on their charms which failed them and urged the security agents to protect lives and property in order to avoid people taking laws into their hands.

Generator fumes kill police sergeant and her two children in Osogbo

A police sergeant, her daughter and grandchild, have died as a result of generator fumes at their home in Olorisaoko Compound, Osogbo, Osun State. According to reports, the police sergeant identified as Mary Samuel and her kids were found dead in the early hours of yesterday November 29th.

The deceased kept a generator in her kitchen. She was found dead with a torch in her hand when security men gained access to her apartment. It is believed that she must have slumped while heading towards the direction of the kitchen, where a generator was kept.

Thankfully, her eldest daughter, Jumoke, who was in the apartment as well, was revived at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, before she was transferred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife for further treatment.
A neighbour of the deceased said
“Someone from the next flat to hers had gone to Mrs Samuel’s apartment to ask for money for electricity. But when she got to the door, it was locked and the cry of one of her grandchildren could be heard. The person that went there became worried that no one was attending to the crying baby and she alerted others in the neighbourhood. The entrance door to the apartment was later broken and people went in.
“Samuel was found almost naked and she was confirmed dead at LAUTECH. Two others were dead too. But Jumoke, the eldest daughter of the deceased, who came around with her two children last weekend, was revived at LAUTECH and has been rushed to the OAUTH, Ile-Ife. The only person not affected by the fumes was a four-month-old granddaughter of the deceased. She was taken away by neighbours as the corpses of the others were being evacuated.”
There remains have been deposited in the morgue.

Governor Wike reacted after Nigerian Army says it uncovered an illegal militia training camp in Rivers

Governor Wike reacted after Nigerian Army says it uncovered an illegal militia training camp in Rivers

Governor Wike reacts after Nigerian Army says it uncovered an illegal militia training camp in Rivers

The Nigerian Army today said it discovered an illegal militia training camp at Nonwa Gbam, (NYSC Orientation Camp) in Tai Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State. A statement released by the Army says troops of Division 6, discovered an illegal militia training camp. The troops met over 100 recruits undergoing military type of training.
According to the Army, preliminary investigations into the discovery has commenced in conjunction with sister security agencies in the state to fish out the sponsors of the militia and the training camp.
However, in a swift reaction, the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, alleged that the Army was been used by the Federal government to intimidate the state government. According to Governor Wike, the trraining camp the military said it uncovered is actually the camp for the training of itscitizens being recruited into the state vigilante group known as Rivers State Neigbourhood Safety Corps Agency.
He stated that the disruption of the training of the Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency Training programme by the Nigerian Army is the worst act of irresponsibility, aimed at instigating insecurity In the State.
Speaking at the flagged off for the construction of a Model Primary Healthcare Centre, Odiokwu Internal Roads, Odiokwu-Anwuigboko and Odiokwu-Oyigbo Roads in Ahoada West local government today, Governor Wike said
"The Army is not concerned about the killing of soldiers in Borno. They are only interested in creating insecurity in Rivers State. If you don't want Rivers State to be safe, then Nigeria will not be safe. They want to use their guns against us", he said.
The governor said that Zamfara and Kogi States have vigilante outfits which were commissioned by the Nigerian Army and the APC Federal Government. He wondered why the Nigerian Army would stoop so low to disrupt a legal training exercise.
"Zamfara and Kogi States have vigilante groups. They commissioned them and the Chief of Army Staff did nothing. The House of Assembly passed a law approving the Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency. The Chief of Army did not challenge the law in court, but today he sent troops to invade the training camp", he said.
The governor regretted that the Nigerian Army has been turned into an outfit to stoke insecurity in order to attract huge security votes.
"The Army is the agency causing insecurity mainly to attract more security votes. They collected $1Billion from our excess crude account, yet our soldiers were killed. All they are doing is to intimidate people for political reasons. When you fight a state blessed by God, you will crumble. Nobody can intimidate us in Rivers State ".
Governor Wike said that the State Government worked with the Police, the DSS and other Federal Agencies to ensure that only law-abiding citizens are recruited by the Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency.
"We did not hire boys for political reasons. This has been a transparent process and that is why the personnel are trained at the NYSC Orientation Camp at Nonwa. We involved the Police and the DSS to ensure that the trainees are profiled for the good of the society. The main aim of this agency assist the security agencies with intelligence and information, since there is a lacuna in this regard ", he said.
Governor Wike declared that the State Government will continue with the training. He said all the antics of the Nigerian Army will not deter the government and people of Rivers State.
"No one man has been a Chief of Army Staff forever. Every job has an expiry date. When Buratai leaves office, he will be held to account for his illegal actions. If they stop the training elsewhere, personnel of the Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency will be trained at the Government House Port Harcourt ", the governor said.

15billion fraud: Appeal court reverses Governor Tambuwal's pardon

15billion fraud: Appeal court reverses Governor Tambuwal's pardon

15billion fraud:?Appeal court reverses Governor?Tambuwal

A five-man panel of the Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto and presided over by Justice Hannatu Sankey has, in two separate appeals, voided the state pardon granted to some former officials of the state who were prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC at the Sokoto state High Court.

Delivering the lead judgments in the two appeals filed by the EFCC against Alhaji Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi (former SSG) and Isa Sadiq Achida, Justice Sankey and Justice Ndukwe-Anyawu both held that the governor's pardon was invalid since the accused persons were still undergoing trial.

The judge further held that the accused person who had not been convicted was presumed innocent and therefore could be validly granted state pardon by the governor. Consequently, the Court set aside the instrument of pardon as well as the discharge of the accused persons by the trial court.

The appeal court further ordered that the two accused persons be tried by another judge of the State High Court other than Justice Bello Abbass who handled the initial trial. It would be recalled that the accused persons were being tried alongside former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, over a N15billion fraud.

A Sokoto State High Court presided over by Honourable Justice Bello Abbas delivered a ruling which discharged them alongside three others, Alhaji Tukur Alkali, Bello Isah and one Alhaji Halilu Modachi. Their discharge was sequel to a motion filed by the accused persons seeking to be discharged from further criminal proceedings based on a pardon granted to them by the Sokoto State Governor.

Dissatisfied with the ruling of the lower court, the EFCC approached the court of appeal sitting in Sokoto praying that the ruling of the lower court be set aside.

''It is idiotic to say Buhari is cloned'' Minister of Information Lai Mohammed says

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said it is “idiotic”  to believe or peddle the rumor that President Buhari is cloned. Since his return from his UK medical trip, there have been rumors that the person in Aso Rock at the moment is a cloned President Buhari whose real name is Jubril from Sudan.
Reacting to the rumors, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, in an interview with journalists in Abuja yesterday Thursday November 29th, said
“It is idiotic to say the President is cloned. I don’t see any serious government responding to that. So, the same Jibrin  that was cloned from Sudan or Chad is in Chad now? Isn’t that stupid? They even said he is from Chad. Yet, the same President is in Chad as we speak. The same Jibrin is remembering what the President did while in Petroleum Trust Fund and he is also remembering what he did when he was Head of State between 1983 and 1985.
“All the ministers do not know who is before them when they attend the Federal Executive Council meeting? The President remembers the  memos he had seen or heard about in 1985 and we say he is cloned. So, Jibrin from Chad or Sudan will now remember all of these? It is too silly for the government to respond to this.  It must be ignored.”

FG Expresses Reservation over Moves to Grant Atiku US Visa

  • Buhari may review status of service chiefs
  • Mohammed insists war against terror on course
The federal government Thursday expressed reservations over moves to grant the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, United States of America’s visa, fearing it might be deemed to be an endorsement of the main opposition party’s candidate by the US government.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, spoke to senior journalists in Abuja Thursday and said while the federal government realised it was the prerogative of the US government to determine who to allow entry into its territory, he said the Nigerian government did not want a situation that would suggest that one candidate was preferred to the other.

He also spoke about the resurgence of terror and recent military operational losses in the North-east and said in spite of these, the government was winning the fight with Boko Haram in the troubled region.
‘’Our position is that if the former VP already has a US visa, we have no problem about it. What we warn the US government is not to give the impression that it is endorsing one particular candidate over the other. That is what is going to happen, if for instance the former VP is granted a visa, Mohammed said, adding, ‘’We are not unaware; I think it is also in the public domain, that Atiku has engaged the service of some lobbyists in the US to facilitate the issuance of visa for him.’’
He said, ‘’As you all will be aware, for more than 12 years there has been a congressional bi-partisan investigation of corruption against certain individuals which had made it difficult for the former vice president to secure a US visa.
‘’I am sure you will all recall the Jefferson case and what they called the cold $90,000 in the fridge. This is not the making of this administration, it has been ongoing.”
As Mohammed spoke yesterday, restating government’s position that the war against terror was apace despite recent operational setbacks, it is gathered that President Muhammadu Buhari might be reviewing his decision to retain the service chiefs till after the general elections in 2019.
Although the information minister would not comment on this, sources close to the presidency said following operational setbacks in the last few weeks at the theater of war, owing to disconnect among the three services, particularly the Army and the Air Force, the president is doing a tactical review of the military situation and might soon act decisively.
“He might remove the service chiefs shortly,” the reliable source said.
Meanwhile, consistent with his recent moves to arrest the insecurity situation in the region, Buhari yesterday departed Abuja for N’Djamena, Chad, to preside over the Summit of Heads of States and Governments of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC).
But Mohammed insisted yesterday that the federal government is winning the war against Boko Haram.
‘’Our position that the federal government had decimated Boko Haram has not changed; we are winning the war,’’ the minister stated while briefing the senior journalists in Abuja.
The retaining of the service chiefs, in spite of attaining their retirement age, over a year ago, has continued to generate mixed feelings among members of the public.
While an insider explained their retention was for strategic security reasons, some groups, including serving military officers, said the decision had affected professionalism in the military.
However, presidency source revealed yesterday that the president is seriously considering firing the service chiefs, suspecting that their lack of proper coordination and distrust among themselves might have compounded the worsening security situation in the North-east, created by the deadly Boko Haram group.
At several meetings with the service chiefs recently, the president was said to have reprimanded them for lack of proper coordination among them in the on-going war against the terrorist group in the North-east, wondering why they have allowed their personal interests and ego to affect their thorough prosecution of the current war against terror, which led to the killing of dozens of troops in Metele, in Borno State recently.
“The president is aware of these challenges created by lack of proper coordination among the service chiefs in prosecuting the war against the insurgency in the North-east.
‘’His recent comments and body language have suggested that he will take drastic measures any moment to ensure that these challenges are solved once and for all.
‘’And if the president believes the retaining of the service chiefs has become a problem in the war against Boko Haram, he will not hesitate to act’’, a senior security personnel in the presidency said.
Worried by the deteriorating security challenges in the country, several groups, including the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere; the Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo; the South-South Leaders Forum and the Coalition of United Political Parties, have called on the president to immediately sack the nation’s service chiefs.
The groups in different statements have raised the alarm over the rise in Boko Haram attacks in the North-east, describing the recent killing of some soldiers in Metele, in Borno State as a national disgrace.
They also cautioned Buhari against what they called politicisation of the military and the police, alleging that Boko Haram is holding on to territories in the region.
But, speaking on security on Thursday in Abuja, Mohammed insisted that despite the recent setbacks brought about by attacks on the military, the Boko Haram insurgents had been largely decimated.
He claimed that when they took over in 2015, Boko Haram was active in 10 states, including the FCT, where they chose where and when to attack.
The Minister added, ‘’I think we need to put the issues in proper context. And I still say that despite the setback that was witnessed last week, our position that we had decimated Boko Haram is still valid. You need to know where we were in 2015 and where we are today in terms of security.
‘’Many of you were in Abuja pre- 2015 and you knew how even unsafe Abuja was. All of us were in Nigeria pre-2015 and we knew that Boko Haram was active in at least 10 states of the federation where they chose where and when to act.
‘’In 2015 when we came in, 20 out of 27 Local Government Areas in Borno State alone were under the occupation of Boko Haram. I am glad that a few of my colleagues followed us to Bama on the 5th of December 2015, and they saw what the situation was.
‘’We were in Maiduguri, Bama, Kauri and Konduga. And I still remember that in the 17-kilometre road between Maiduguri and Bama, there was no single vehicular traffic on the road.’’
He further explained that of the 6,000 plus structures in Bama, none was standing, saying they were all destroyed by Boko Haram.
He said, “Actually, Boko Haram was not just occupying, they were in government in most parts of Borno State and four local governments in Yobe, where they held court, they hoisted their flags, they collected taxes, they deposed emirs and the Judiciary.
‘’Today, not one inch of Nigerian territory is under Boko Haram. They have all been pushed out of Nigerian territory; they now operate from the fringes, from Lake Chad Island (Basin). So, anybody, who is well versed in insurgency, will appreciate that what happened last week was nothing but a setback, and I think it is not to say that the war against insurgency is not going well.’’
The federal government’s spokesman saluted the gallant men and women of the military, who he said, are sacrificing their lives for the nation daily and paying the supreme price for the country to be peaceful, adding that what is important now, are about the steps the government has taken.
According to him, “It gladdens my heart that on Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari was in Maiduguri for the occasion of Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference.
‘’He seized the opportunity to express Nigerians’ gratitude and appreciation to the entire military and assured them that the equipment materials, he will make sure they get. He said this is a must win war.
“Today as we speak Mr. President is in Ndjamena as the chairman of the summit of heads of state and government of the Lake Chad Basin. As you are aware, the Multi-National Joint Task Force is made up of Chad, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, with Benin Republic and Central Africa Republic.
“Insurgency is not a local issue, it is a global issue. And I am glad that Mr. President is in Ndjamena trying to rally support for the fight against insurgency. I think this setback does not mean that the war against insurgency is not being won.’’
The Senate abruptly adjourned plenary recently in honour of soldiers killed by the insurgents and ordered its Committees on Army and Defence to investigate the killings as well as probe the welfare of Nigerian troops fighting insurgency.
Mr. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, in a statement in Abuja said the meeting of the Heads of States and Governments of the LCBC took place in N’Djamena, Chad thursday.
Also, the President of Benin Republic, a troops-contributing country, was also invited to the meeting.
He said the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), and national operations of the affected countries had appreciably degraded the capacity of Boko Haram terrorists, although the insurgents still retain the capacity to attack isolated targets in desperate search for supplies.
According to Adesina, the one-day meeting reviewed the security situation in the areas affected by Boko Haram insurgency.
He said it would also adopt measures to enhance the capacity of the MNJTF to meet the challenges of securing the areas.
Adesina stated, “The presidents of the LCBC member countries of Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and the Central African Republic were invited to attend the meeting.
“The President of Benin Republic, a troops-contributing country was also invited to attend.
“The MNJTF and the national operations of the affected countries have appreciably degraded the capacity of Boko Haram terrorists, although the insurgents still retain the capacity to attack isolated targets in desperate search for supplies.’’

'Three days to my arrest, I was publicly threatened by John Oyegun for my criticism of the current administration' - Olisa Metuh

Sylvanus Tahir, counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC in the ongoing trial of Olisa Metuh, expressed concerns about the manner Metuh is going about his prosecution before Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja.

Metuh, a former Spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is standing trial along with Destra Investment Limited for an alleged N400 million fraud involving the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Tahir’s concern followed what he termed Metuh's frivolities which he said has no bearing with the case in court. While in the dock, Metuh had told the Court that he had been publicly threatened by John Oyegun then Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
While being led in evidence by Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, his counsel, Metuh said: “Three days to my arrest, I was publicly threatened by John Oyegun for my criticism of the current administration.
Ali Ndume, then Majority Leader of the Senate issued a statement noting that the PDP was in a state of comatose, without Doctors or Pharmacists to revive the main opposition party PDP, but has only one 'nut' currently holding the party which is Olisa Metuh."
According to Metuh, the statement credited to Ndume served as “a signal to the government and its agencies that, they needed to remove that 'nut'”, thus making him a target. During his evidence-in-chief, Metuh further told the court that he never stopped criticizing the government on promises that were made to gain access to power in the past election. “I advised that they should stop celebrating imaginary achievements,” he said.

His counsel then applied to tender the July 15, 2015 edition of Vanguard newspaper, which was admitted in evidence by the Court and marked Exhibit B15.

Metuh also lamented that his bank accounts had been seized by the EFCC, and “all my investments at the ARM, the institution I have invested in for the past 14 o 15 years, have all been seized, including all my life savings"
