Euro 2020: Germany, Netherlands To Clash; Easy Draw For England

Euro 2020: Germany, Netherlands To Clash; Easy Draw For England

Former champions Germany and the Netherlands will meet each other in qualifying for Euro 2020 after being paired together in Sunday’s draw in Dublin, but World Cup semi-finalists England have little to complain about.
The Germans were the most dangerous team outside the first pot of seeds for the competition, relegated due to poor recent results which included losing to the Dutch in the Nations League.
Joachim Loew’s side will also face Northern Ireland, who they met at the Euro 2016 finals, as well as Estonia and Belarus in Group C.
“The group is typically tough, I’d say. The Netherlands and Germany are the favourites, but it should be enough for both (to go through),” said Germany head coach Joachim Loew. The top two teams in each of the 10 groups will qualify for Euro 2020, which for the first time will be staged in 12 different venues across the continent, including Amsterdam.
And having missed out on both Euro 2016 and this year’s World Cup, Dutch coach Ronald Koeman insisted qualifying rather than scoring another victory over Germany is his priority.
“If you look back how it was one year ago and how the public were with the national team, it is totally different at this stage,” said Koeman, who has led the Netherlands to the final four of the Nations League.
“They have a lot of belief in the team, the team is showing a good development and now the target is to qualify for the tournament. We need to be there.”

The semi-finals and final will be played at Wembley, handing England a major incentive to go on and win the competition, fresh from reaching the last four at this year’s World Cup.

Ballon D’Or Winners To Be Named On Monday

Ballon D’Or Winners To Be Named On Monday

The men’s Ballon d’Or winner will be announced on Monday – and an inaugural female victor will be named too.
There are 30 candidates on the shortlist for the male award, including 11 Premier League players, Lionel Messi and current holder Cristiano Ronaldo.
England’s Lucy Bronze and Fran Kirby are among the 15-woman shortlist.
France Football has awarded the prestigious prize to the best male player every year since 1956, adding a women’s award this year.
Barcelona captain Messi and Juventus forward Ronaldo – formerly of Manchester United and Real Madrid – have won the past 10 Ballons d'Or between them. Kaka, in 2007, was the winner that preceded them.
Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric is the odds-on favourite with bookmakers to add the Ballon d’Or to the Fifa Best Men’s Player award he picked up in September.
For the first time there is also a youth award, the Kopa Trophy, with Liverpool and England full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold on the 10-man shortlist.
The ceremony will start at 20:00 GMT and will be hosted by David Ginola in Paris.
Before we reveal the full 30-man shortlist, can you name the seven players to finish highest - excluding Messi and Ronaldo – every year for the past decade?
Nine finished third behind the pair, with the 2010 answer finishing second and Ronaldo down in sixth that year. (BBC)

Milan Battle Back To Beat Parma, Climb Fourth Of Serie A Table

Milan Battle Back To Beat Parma, Climb Fourth Of Serie A Table

AC Milan got back to winning ways in Serie A on Sunday as second half goals from Patrick Cutrone and Franck Kessie saw them come from behind to beat promoted Parma 2-1 and move fourth ahead of Lazio who were held 1-1 at bottom club Chievo.
Gennaro Gattuso’s Milan side fell 2-0 to Juventus and were held 1-1 by Lazio in their previous two league games, but the win at the San Siro takes them fourth one point ahead of the Romans who rescued a point in Verona thanks to a second-half Ciro Immobile goal.
It was a hard-fought victory for Milan, days after competing in the Europa League and with a number of players missing.Alessio Romagnoli, Mattia Caldara, Lucas Biglia and Giacomo Bonaventura are all injured, with Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain suspended.
“This is a precious win because we played against a team who can trouble you in every moment,” said Gattuso.
“This team is incredible, the boys always show grit, determination and sense of belonging. They are giving their all, it’s easy to coach a group like that.”
Roberto Inglese nodded in his fourth goal this season for Parma from a corner five minutes after the break but Milan pulled one back six minutes later thanks to Cutrone volleying home.
Kessie slotted in Milan's second from the spot on 71 minutes after Alessandro Bastoni was deemed after consultation with VAR to have handled the ball.
“It’s disappointing to come home with zero points despite having played well,” said Parma coach Roberto D’Aversa.
Parma drop to eighth and are now five points behind AC Milan who occupy the final Champions League berth. (SuperSport)

Origi Snatches Dramatic Derby Win For Liverpool

Origi Snatches Dramatic Derby Win For Liverpool

A freak injury-time goal from Liverpool substitute Divock Origi settled the Merseyside derby and kept Jurgen Klopp’s unbeaten team hard on the heels of Premier League pacesetters Manchester City on Sunday.
The 1-0 victory extended Liverpool's unbeaten sequence in Merseyside derbies in the Premier League to 16 games although the manner of the winning goal made this one of the more unforgettable of those games.
In the 96th minute, Virgil van Dijk mishit a hopeful, desperate shot in the direction of the Everton goal with the effort ballooning into the air and the defender turning his back in disgust.
But Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford struggled to judge the ball as it dropped from the Anfield night sky.
With the ball looking as if it might hit the cross-bar, the England man pushed the ball upwards and presented Origi with a simple headed finish into an open net.
Liverpool thought they had won the game three minutes earlier when van Dijk headed on a corner and Origi turned a difficult chance onto the Everton bar, with home supporters appealing for a penalty after Daniel Sturridge’s follow-up shot appeared to strike Gylfi Sigurdsson on the arm.
But how the 100th Anfield league derby still stood goalless at that stage was a surprise with the first half, especially, producing multiple chances for both teams. (SuperSport)

President Buhari denies being a Chauvinist, says his administration has enough female representation

President Buhari has denied reports that he is a chauvinist and that his administration has a low percentage of female representation. The President reacted to the report when he spoke with the Nigerian community in Poland yesterday, December 2nd.
When asked about the number of women in his administration, President Buhari said
‘‘I have plans for all Nigerians. I am not a male chauvinist. If I’m a chauvinist will I give the Finance Ministry to women?’’ .
President Buhari also used the occasion to reiterate that his government will continue to maintain focus and deliver on the three focal points of his campaign in 2015: security, economy and the fight against corruption.
‘‘Those in the North East will tell you that in spite of the recent setbacks, there is a difference between the time we came and before.  We are not doing badly on security, economy and agriculture. We have virtually stopped the importation of food especially rice and we are saving a lot of money. We now have food security and that has come with fiscal security because a lot of young educated people have not regretted going back to the farms and earning a respectable living. I am afraid, this is not receiving good publicity… but a lot of people in the rural areas are enjoying the benefits of our interventions in agriculture,’’ he said.

Arsenal Grab North London Bragging Rights Over Spurs

Arsenal Grab North London Bragging Rights Over Spurs

Arsenal are in Cloud Nine right now after defeating North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 4-2, on a day Chelsea also beat Fulham 2-0.
A Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang double inspired Arsenal to the thrilling 4-2 north London derby triumph.
Jan Vertonghen conceded a penalty with a handball to enable Aubameyang to slot in the opener on 10 minutes.
But Spurs struck twice in four minutes to lead at half-time. Eric Dier glanced in Christian Eriksen’s free-kick before Harry Kane scored a penalty after Rob Holding’s foul on Son Heung-min.
After the break, Aubameyang brilliantly swept in a long-range equaliser, taking his tally to 10 PL goals this season.
Substitute Alexandre Lacazette put Arsenal ahead with a deflected effort on 74 minutes, and that was swiftly followed by Lucas Torreira’s drive from an acute angle to make it 4-2, his first goal for the club.
Vertonghen was sent off late on as Unai Emery’s side move above Spurs on goal difference to fourth on 30 points.
Arsenal will next play Jose Mourinho’s struggling Manchester United on 5 December at Old Trafford, while Spurs will host Southampton same day.

Super Falcons: Embodiment Of Nigeria’s Winning Mentality — Saraki

President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Sunday, described the Super Falcons of Nigeria as embodiment of the winning mentality and resilience of the country against any challenge.
Saraki in a statement by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Yusuph Olaniyonu, in Abuja, while congratulating the Falcons who in Ghana yesterday defeated the Banyana, Banyana of South Africa, described the team as the real  “Champions of Africa.”
He noted that even when the team lost their first game in the competition, many Nigerians remained solidly behind them because they knew that like the true Nigerian team they will always come out victorious after what appeared to be the initial set-back.
The Senate President who was highly elated by the 9th continental victory said: “Champions of Africa! Congratulations to our Super Falcons who have made the nation proud again. Congratulations on your well-deserved victory!”
The President of the Senate also lauded the Coach, technical crew, and the players for their sense of purpose, team spirit and determination that saw them emerge African champions once more at the 11th African Women Cup of Nation (AWCON) in Ghana.
He stated that the Senate in particular and the National Assembly in general would continue to support the development of sports in the country through necessary legislations and adequate budgetary provisions.

ASUU strike: FG withdraws `no work no pay? threat

The Federal Government has withdrawn the recent threat to activate the ‘no work no pay policy’ against striking University teachers. This was disclosed by the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a chat with Vanguard.

Ogunyemi also said that the negotiation meeting between ASUU and the Federal Government would continue on Monday, stressing that what the union was doing was to rescue the education sector from imminent collapse and to ensure that the children of the poor get access to quality and affordable education.

The ASUU boss also said that last Friday’s meeting between the two parties did not yield much results.
He said:  "well, we have confirmed that they have withdrawn that threat (no work no pay). So it appears the threat is not there for now. But even if the threat is there, we are prepared for that because for our members, no sacrifice is too much to salvage Nigeria’s education.
Shortly before our action while the NLC (Nigeria Labour Congress) hullabaloo was going on with federal government, they went to the Federal Executive Council that they were activating that rule.”

Boko Haram attack military base in Yobe, kill two soldiers

Two soldiers were killed in Yobe state on Sunday December 2nd after Boko Haram members attacked and destroyed an armoured tank base of the Army at Buni Gari in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
Vanguard reports that the insurgents stormed Buni Gari at about 5pm, shooting sporadically at the military base. The two soldiers were killed before the sect members set the military base on fire.
This attack comes few weeks after the sect members also attacked military base in Metele and others, reportedly killing over 100 soldiers.

Nigerian Army says $1bn approved to fight insurgency hasn?t been released

The Nigerian Army says the $1 billion approved to fight insurgency and other security challenges in the country, has not been released. Recall that in 2017, the National Economic council (NEC) approved the request of the Federal government to withdraw $1 billion from the excess crude account for the fight against insurgency.

Follwoing the recent attack in Metele and other areas in Borno where over 100 solders were reportedly killed, Nigerians asked why the military was still using obsolete weapons despite the approval of the $1 billion .
Responding to this, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Sani Usman, in an interview with NTA last night December 2nd, said the money is still being processed.
“People should understand also that this is a democratic system in which procurement and of course funding of defense related issues takes such a long time. Take for instance the issue of the $1 billion approved recently by Mr. President, up till now the process is ongoing. The ministry of defense is still pursuing the matter to the point that when it is done, the armed forces will definitely get more equipment, more arms and ammunition.” Sani said
Speaking further, Sani said the Army has identified those that have spread fake news about the recent attacks on military base in Metele and that its legal department is about to take them to court.
“So sad and unfortunate that our troops came under enemy attack on the 18th of last month and we suffered causality as we mentioned. Sadly, we lost 23 gallant officers and men and of course some of them sustained injuries. In respect of the effort, we are trying as much as possible to make sure that first and foremost we give timely and accurate information on all our activities and operations bearing national security concern. And then secondly, we have gone a north further to identify where those fake news and fabricated stories are coming from, and definitely our legal department is taking step to make sure that all those involved would be taken to court'' he said

It is despicable that President Buhari will continue to endorse the spinning of lies by his handlers against another Presidential candidate - PDP

It is despicable that President Buhari will continue to endorse the spinning of lies by his handlers against another Presidential candidate - PDP

It is despicable that President Buhari will continue to endorse the spinning of lies by his handlers against another Presidential candidate - PDP

PDP has just issued a statement calling out the Buhari presidency over what it calls 'fresh lies on Atiku'.

The attention of the PDP Presidential Campaign has been drawn to fresh fabrications allegedly being sponsored by the Muhammadu Buhari Presidency, in its unrelenting bid to tarnish the image of our Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, since their realization that Nigerians have reached a consensus to vote him in as their next President.
It is indeed despicable that President Buhari will continue to endorse the spinning of lies by his handlers against another Presidential candidate, including its false claims that Atiku Abubakar cannot travel to the United States, which Nigerians have since seen to be mere fabrications.
Is it not ludicrous that the Buhari Presidency has abandoned its statutory duties and turned itself into a lying, “monitoring spirit” on Atiku Abubakar and his movements, yet it has not been able to produce any documentary evidence to substantiate its claims?
President Buhari’s fixation on Atiku Abubakar, to the extent of sponsoring fabrications in a section of the media, only goes to show that he is intimidated by our candidate’s resume, his overwhelming popularity and policy direction, which have since amplified his (President Buhari’s) incompetence and lack of direction, as a result of which he is being rejected by the majority of Nigerians.
Atiku Abubakar is a global figure and is not inhibited, in any way whatsoever, from traveling to any part of the world.
However, he is not prepared to make the sky his office, unlike President Buhari, who unleashed a widely condemned taste for very expensive and wasteful gallivanting with our national fleet, while Nigerians wallow in abject poverty for neglect and abuse of resources.
In any case, the PDP refuses to lose sight of the fact that our campaign is on the rescue mission and that Nigerians are looking up to our candidate for direction.
As such, we will not allow the rejected Buhari Presidency to distract us from our focus of repositioning and redirecting our nation to the path of a united, peaceful, secure and prosperous nation where are all citizens are happy and free.
The PDP Campaign therefore counsels President Buhari to note that Nigerians have moved ahead with Atiku Abubakar as their next President. He should therefore use the remaining days of his fading administration to prepare answers for his misrule.
President Buhari should, by now, be providing answers for the over N11 trillion stolen under his watch, particularly in the petroleum sector where he sits as minister; the alleged diversion of funds meant for the purchase of weapons and welfare of our soldiers to finance his re-election campaign as well as the neglect and insensitivity that led to the escalation of killings and bloodletting in various parts of the country under his rule.
President Buhari should provide answers for his incompetence and harsh economic policies that plunged our economy into recession, leading to high cost of living, loss of over 30 million jobs, acute poverty, hunger, collapse of infrastructure in our country in the last three and half years.
On our own part, the PDP will continue to focus on issue-based campaign and run with practical answers to the myriad of challenges facing our nation in line with the manifesto of our repositioned party and the policy direction of our Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Deputy Director, Ministry of Police Affairs arraigned for N145.3m fraud

Deputy Director,?Ministry of Police Affairs arraigned for?N145.3m fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Lagos office, on Friday, November 30, 2018, arraigned one Bello Na’ Allah Yabo, a Deputy Director, Accounts, Ministry of Police Affairs, before Justice A.I. Ogunmoye of the State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

He was arraigned on a 13-count charge bordering on conspiracy, fraudulent diversion of funds and money laundering to the tune of N145,342,063 (One Hundred and Forty-Five Million, Three Hundred and Forty-Two Thousand, Sixty-Three Kobo).

The offence is contrary to Sections 383(1) and 390(5) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2009.

Yabo is facing trial alongside his company, Imrana Ventures, for allegedly using his position as a former Pay Officer, Nigeria Police Force, Ekiti State, in 2015 to divert to his personal use, money meant as the emoluments of police officers in the state. The defendant allegedly concealed the proceeds of crime through his company account domiciled in Unity Bank.
One of the counts reads: “That you, Bello Na'Allah Yabo, a.k.a.  Imrana Ventures, between February 3 and 5, 2015, in Ado-Ekiti, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, fraudulently converted to your use the sum of N21,899,600.00 (Twenty- One Million, Eight Hundred and Ninety-Nine Thousand, Six Hundred Naira), property of the Nigeria Police Force.”
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him. In view of his plea, the prosecution counsel, George Chia-Yakua, asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the defendant in prison custody.

The defence counsel, Y.C, Maikyau, prayed the court to move an application for bail dated November 14, 2018 on behalf of his client. However, the prosecution counsel opposed the bail application on the grounds that the defendant had not placed any material before the court to warrant being granted the bail.

He, therefore, prayed the court to reject the defendant’s application for bail in totality.
